http://bit.ly/p3RlZ5 Musical theory is no ones favorite topic, especially if you're a beginner. How ever it's something you cannot avoid if you eventually want to expand beyond basic open chords and barre chords. In this article I want to introduce you to musical keys on the guitar, what chords sound good together and how you can easily find those chords for a given key using a concept known as one – four – five.
After you read this article and watch the example it should be crystal clear how you can start figuring out the right chords for each key on your guitar.
Understanding What a Musical Key is
A Musical key on it's most basic level is a group of notes centred around one particular note. So if you're playing something in the Key of F major the entire piece is centred around the F major note and also uses the other notes found in the F major scale.
It may use all the notes in that scale, but more often then not will only use a few. How do you know what the right notes are to play together in each key? That's what we're going to learn next.
The One-Four-Five of a Key
A natural pattern that exists in music is One-Four-Five also written in roman numerals as I-IV-V. These numbers stand for the degree of a scale. So the first (root note), fourth note and fifth note are going to sound well together.
Let's look at an example in the Key of D, first we need to look at the D major scale.
D E F# G A B C# D
From here we can see that the One note is the D, the Four note is the G and the five note is the A. So playing in the Key of D major you are going to want to use the D chord, G chord and A chord.
This isn't to say that these are the only chords that work for this key, of course any of the notes in the major scale will work, but these are the easiest ones to pick out.
Watch the video below to learn more about the one-four-five concept and watch another example.

Jeff Waters, the guitarist and mastermind of the thrash metal band Annihilator and Epiphone signature artist, will officially launch his own Jeff Waters Annihilator Epiphone model with two appearances each day at the booth. Waters will be available to sign autographs and meet fans. Epiphone Guitars will also showcase the new Epiphone Electric Mandolin, the new Epiphone Les Paul Plustop PRO/FX and the Epiphone Masterbilt Cutaway Acoustic with electronics among many others.
Epiphone has a long history of supplying some of the greatest guitarists of all time with the instrument they need to excel. And that history continues with the new "Annihilation-V," made in cooperation with legendary guitarist, Jeff Waters. Prestigiously ranked at #3 in Joel Mclver's 2009 book The 100 Greatest Metal Guitarists, Jeff and his band "Annihilator" have been shredding audiences worldwide for years and now he's ready to take it up a notch with what he calls "The Ultimate Metal Guitar!"
For as long as there have been mandolins, there has been the problem of unequal string pair volume. This problem is even more apparent when attempting to amplify an 8-string mandolin using an ordinary microphone or monophonic pickup. Epiphone has solved that problem with the world's first mandolin that allows the musician to individually adjust string pair volumes using Shadow Germany's new Quad NanoMag pickup.
Since 1952, the Les Paul guitar has stood the test of time and been the choice of countless guitarists, from Les Paul himself to Jimmy Page to Slash. Today, Epiphone announces a new Les Paul model that's sure to have the shredders in the crowd cheering: the new Les Paul Plustop PRO/FX, which combines all the great features and looks of a Les Paul but adds a double-locking Floyd Rose tremolo and coil-tapping for an amazing combination of crunch and versatility.
When it comes to acoustic guitar tone and quality, nothing performs like an all solid-wood instrument. Harking back to the 1930's and their heritage, the Epiphone Masterbilt line combines traditional construction methods and features with premium all solid tone woods to bring you a new "vintage" instrument with deep rich lows, shimmering highs and just the right amount of mids. While many other guitars in this price class use pressed backs, spliced neck joints and even artificial wood backs and sides, you can be assured that every Masterbilt holds true to its all solid-wood promise.
Building upon this promise is the newest member of the Masterbilt line – the DR-500MCE model, featuring an elegant rounded (Venetian) cutaway for easy upper-fret access and state-of-art electronics.
For over 150 years, Baldwin Piano has graced celebrated concert halls and stages everywhere. Thousands of meticulous steps and only the finest materials go into the complex process of handcrafting a single Baldwin piano, carrying on the legacy of the world's finest piano maker. Baldwin Piano will exhibit the division's new vertical model B49 and new vertical model B342, both with a focus on international appeal. The 52" vertical Baldwin model, popular in Europe and Asia will also be on display.
Daily demonstrations will also take place inside the booth. Baldwin Grand pianos on display will include the BD 152M Grand with player and 6'1" Grand (model 158) full size.
If a guest of Musikmesse is looking for the coolest, hippest and most appealing gear and apparel offered, they will not need to look past Gibson booth #E50. Gibson's Lifestyle division will showcase the latest line of Gibson pickups, straps, instrument care packages and replacement parts, along with gig bags and closed and open guitar cases will be exhibited. Some will be seen for the very first time at Musikmesse 2010. New Gibson hats and shirts will be displayed in a special section of the booth devoted to this newest entry into Lifestyle and will give fans the opportunity to rock out in fashion. How much? Good question! Research Gibson's prices
Demonstrations and artist appearances are scheduled for each day of the show. Famous Drum Sets No.1 - The Contraption
As I began to think about how (and with whom) to start this column, something occurred to me… pianos. Pianos are exactly the same no matter who sits down to play them; none of the keys can be moved or added to, none of the pedals re-positioned or taken away. It is an instrument that is fixed and rigid; tuned to a standard set of notes and from one to another are all, in theory at least, the same. This same standard can also be applied to wind instruments. Sure some variances may occur in reed , mouthpiece, color and tone, but a trumpeter who loses his (or her) horn can replace it with a new one and still have the same set of tools at their disposal, as they did with their old favorite.
This may be the fractal that separates us drummers from the rest of the musical community, the common element, the missing chunk of grey matter. Replacing lost or stolen gear is painful for any musician and we all hate to hear the horror stories of friends who have lost special pieces of equipment. Let’s face it our gear is personal to us. We sweat into it, bleed on it and guard it with our lives – ready to fight anyone who might threaten to harm it. These mere devices of wood, metal and plastic take on the personalities of their owners and not only provide the means of expression, but also the inspiration for it. Nowhere is this phenomenon more present than in the relationship of drummer to drum set.
[% oiopub-banner-3-left %]---------------------------------------------------------------
Prior to the 1900’s there were no drum sets.
The brass bands and civic orchestras of the day played parades and concerts in the parks and employed multiple drummers to punctuate the music and keep the pulse of the band strong. That changed in the 1930’s during the great depression. No longer able to hire multiple percussionists, band leaders began seeking out the most talented drummers to use all of their limbs, doing double and even triple duty on a creation that became known as “The Contraption†or “Trap Set’ for short.
Drummers were now using their feet to play bass drums and cymbals and splitting the duties of their hands between the snare drum and all manner of effects like cowbells and woodblocks. Since there was no precedence for how to set up “The Contraption†drummers put the tools of their trade where they could easily be played and in a manner that was unique to them. The resulting “Trap Sets†came in all shapes and sizes, much like Drum Sets do today, each one an individual expression of its player.
You may be getting a sense of just how many great ways there are to set up your “Trap Setâ€. The sky is the limit, but there have been some notable standouts over the years and we’ll be going over them all! In the meantime I’d like to challenge you to take your playing on a trip back in time. See what you can accomplish with only your snare drum and bass drum. One hundred years ago, this was the foundation of drum set playing. Try it for a day, then add a cowbell or tambourine and see how it changes your playing.

Marshall MA Series amplifiers
http://bit.ly/mQjYQb
For the best part of 50 years the sight and sound of a Marshall valve amplifier has been the envy and dream of many a guitarist. Legendary artists such as Slash, Jeff Beck and the late great Jimi Hendrix, plus rising stars like Ray Torro (My Chemical Romance) and Alexi Laiho (Children Of Bodom) continue to inspire with their raw talent and mighty valve-powered Marshall backlines. So when it comes to tone, it's clear that professional guitarists love valves.
Now Marshall invites you to experience valve tone for yourself with our most accessible range of valve-driven guitar amplifiers ever – introducing the all-new, all-valve MA Series.
Heart of tone
With a classic ECC83/EL34 pre and power amp combination at its heart, the UK designed and engineered MA range is indeed built on solid pure-valve foundations. The MA Series provides both head and combo versions in either 100 Watt or 50 Watt outputs, all sharing the same trusty feature set.
The dual channel design provides an abundance of tonal possibilities, while the straightforward front panel layout and individual EQ sections means achieving the sounds you want couldn't be simpler.
With single coil pickups the Clean channel delivers clear bright notes, whilst switching to humbuckers and cranking the volume pot leads to natural signal break up, ideal for both cutting Indie-style rhythm and vintage rock riffing respectively.
Hit the Channel selection switch and the uniquely voiced Overdrive channel lets you experience the full potential of Marshall valve power, from glorious bluesy crunch to hard driving rock and all points in-between. Engaging the Overdrive's Boost function provides extra gain for both pounding metal madness and fret-burning solos alike.
The right balance
The difference between your overdrive and 'boosted' sound is governed by the MA's Crunch Balance control. Increasing the Crunch Balance moves your normal overdrive sound closer to that of your 'boosted' tone. Alternatively, backing off the Crunch Balance control decreases the amount of gain
and volume in your unboosted overdrive tone only, allowing the jump from say crunch to metal instantly, via either the front panel or the included 2-way footswitch. Used in this manner, the Crunch Balance has the ability to create a pseudo third channel from the Boost function, further increasing the MA Series' tonal spectrum and versatility.
Finishing touches
Additional tonal fine tuning is provided by a Master section consisting of Presence, Resonance and Reverb, and if pedals, FX boards and stomp boxes are your thing, then a serial FX loop is also included across the range.
Finally, both the MA100H and MA50H heads feature semi-transparent baffles and illuminated chassis, allowing your valve-powered tone to literally shine. Whether you're finally realizing a full Marshall stack dream, searching for a rugged gigging workhorse, looking for your first valve amplifier, or all three, the Marshall MA Series provides the answer. Now is the time to discover valve tone. Visit www.marshallamps.com for more information
