Harmony-Central--Hot on the heels of their latest critically acclaimed album, The Eternal, Sonic Youth has teamed-up with Fender to create two of the most highly anticipated guitars in recent memory — the Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo signature Jazzmaster guitars, which will be available beginning July 1.
Moore and Ranaldo, canonized as two of "The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time" by Rolling Stone magazine in 2003, make up two-fifths of one of the most respected and influential bands in recent memory. Moore and Ranaldo have been playing Fender instruments for the lion's share of their careers, to the point where the simple image of a Jazzmaster guitar creates an instant free-associative connection with the band. In celebration of 2008's 50th Anniversary of the Jazzmaster, Fender had been connecting and talking to all of the icons of the instrument, and a dialogue struck up with Lee and Thurston that led to the design and creation of Fender's latest signature model additions.
Moore and Ranaldo have always modified their Jazzmaster guitars—removing all extraneous controls—simplifying and stripping them back to their essence, leaving just a three-way switch and volume knob. In many ways, these two instruments are similar, yet in almost every major way (pickups, bridges, frets) they are totally different. Both guitars have alder bodies, "C"-shape maple necks with rosewood fingerboards, American Vintage Jazzmaster tremolos and Black anodized aluminum pickguards. Moore's Jazzmaster features Seymour Duncan Antiquity II for Jazzmaster pickups, an Adjusto-Matic bridge and 21 jumbo frets, and is available in Forest Green Transparent satin nitrocellulose lacquer finish with satin black painted headstock. Ranaldo's guitar features revoiced Wide Range humbucking pickups, Mustang-style bridge and 21 vintage frets, and is available in Sapphire Blue Transparent satin nitrocellulose lacquer finish with satin black painted headstock.
Each Sonic Youth Jazzmaster guitar comes with a custom sticker sheet and a full-color 24-page indie rock 'zine containing photos, set lists, tuning charts, illustrations, tech info and extensive interviews. Designed and laid out largely by Ranaldo himself, this is the definitive insider's guide to all things Jazzmaster in the world of Sonic Youth.
Sonic Youth came together in 1981 and quickly became a fixture in New York City's No Wave art and music scene. Over the years, they have released several monumental albums, including Sonic Youth (1982), Daydream Nation (1988), Goo (1990), Dirty (1992) and Murray Street (2002), and have influenced legions of bands all over the world. Known as much for their hardcore ethos and DIY work ethic as their signature lo-fi noise explorations and radical playing styles and techniques, they have been able to achieve recognition and success, all while staying true to their original values and vision.
"We were stoked to have the opportunity to create something together, and the resultant instruments are spot-on at evoking the essence of their unique styles and preferences," said Justin Norvell, marketing director for Fender electric guitars. "These guitars went through pretty rigorous R&D—the guys and their techs were incredibly hands-on throughout the whole process. When they were home we took their original guitars apart, re-voiced pickups against their vintage guitars, and more… when they were out on tour we traded countless late-night e-mails, making adjustments based on their road performance. In the end we are all extremely happy with the results, and we believe that Sonic Youth fans all over the world will be as well."

Paul Reed Smith SE Mike Mushok Baritone Guitar
http://bit.ly/
Baritone guitars have a long history in rock and country, providing everything from extra low end to surfy twang to tic-tac bass (‘Six Days On The Road’ by Dave Dudley comes to mind). These days, they are most often used in heavier rock styles, as they emulate the low six strings of a seven-string axe very well without the player having to learn a new physical landscape. They are typically tuned B to B in a standard tuning configuration, but, like a regular guitar, can be re-tuned to suit the player and style at hand. The best thing about a bari for heavy rock is that you get the same sounds as a de-tuned conventional guitar puts out, but without the often soft/mushy feel they can have due to the bari’s longer scale length and heavier strings. The Paul Reed Smith SE Mike Mushok Baritone Guitar is an excellent choice for those looking to put the low and heavy hammer down in rock and metal styles without breaking the bank, as it retails for $930.00. It is made of mahogany and features two humbucking pickups and this combination makes it sound positively lethal when pumped into a high-gain amplifier.
[% oiopub-banner-3-left %]---------------------------------------------------------------
The Mushok is built around the same body as the PRS SE Custom but some important differences, the main one being the 27.7-inch scale length as opposed to the 25-inch measurement found on most PRS guitars. This allows the Mushok to be tuned lower without losing string tension, which is important to many guitarists. It also features neck and headstock binding, an inlay-free ebony fingerboard, a string-through-body stop tailpiece, silverburst finish, and a three-way blade-style pickup switch. The body is flat-topped and all mahogany but feels surprisingly light when picked up. Hardware found on the Mushok includes two knurled chrome knobs for volume and tone, non-locking PRS-designed tuners, and PRS-designed Treble and Bass humbucking pickups.
The Mushok fits very well into the gap between a guitar and an electric bass and, like many baritones, requires little or no transition for the player. It may be one of the best choices on the market for rock and metal rhythm playing. It has enough output to drive an amp, but it still retains focus and never turns to mush. The three pickup combination give guitarists the tones they would expect in this kind of instrument and can cover many bases. If drop-tuned rhythms are what you crave, the Mushok could be exactly what you need to drive your point home. Now, if PRS would make one with a trem for all us surf music fans, it would truly be a perfect world.

Jackson Custom RR Limited Run Mike Shannon Guitar
http://bit.ly/ Crafted in a limited run of just 10 instruments by Jackson Custom Shop Master Build Mike Shannon, the Custom RR Limited Run bears the luthier’s signature and is destined to become highly collectible.
Shannon, who was intimately involved in creating Randy Rhoad’s original black Jackson signature model in the early 1980s, has hand-signed and numbered the back of the headstock of each guitar while the truss rod cover is etched with Shannon’s signature. Each instrument comes with a leather binder housing a certificate of authenticity and CD with photos of the guitar in various stages of construction.
Each neck-through-body guitar boasts a quartersawn maple speed neck with ebony fingerboard, 22 frets, pearl sharkfin inlays, and Jackon’s celebrated compound radius fingerboard. The strings traverse the body through a gold-plated Rhoads V-plate for superior sustain. The Seymour Duncan JB (bridge) and Jazz (neck) pickups are surrounded by gold-plated rings while the distinctive Rhoads pick guard is also gold-plated for lavish looks.
The DNA of the late great Randy Rhoads and Jackson Guitars are inextricably intertwined. It was due to Rhoads that the Jackson name first appeared on a guitar headstock. Before joining Ozzy Osbourne in the early ‘80s, Rhoads would bring his guitars to owner Grover Jackson’s Charvel workshop to have them set up and modified. In 1980, after being recruited by Osbourne, Rhoads approached Charvel with a unique guitar design he wanted to have built. Working from a sketch drawn by Rhoads on a paper napkin, the first Jackson guitar was made. This world-famous, neck-through-body, white guitar was dubbed the “Concorde,” referring to its futuristic and streamlined offset-V shape. Because he felt the instrument didn’t fit the Charvel image, Grover Jackson decided to put his own name on the headstock. Thus, two legends were born.
Because the body joined the neck at the 15th fret on the original white model, Rhoads requested another version giving him easier access to the higher reaches of the fingerboard. The design was accordingly modified by downsizing the body and, at Rhoads’ request, the offset-V shape became even more pronounced, streamlining the guitar’s body even further.
Rhoads’ revolutionary design was rightly heralded by Guitar World magazine as “a milestone in the development in the ‘pointy guitar’ aesthetic that has ruled the metal firmament ever since.” Indeed, it is so highly regarded by the metal-loving masses that in 2006 it was voted “Legendary Guitar” in Guitar World’s 25th Anniversary Readers Poll--beating out iconic axes owned by Eddie Van Halen, Jimmy Page, B.B. King, and Stevie Ray Vaughan.
A non-signature version of this Custom Shop instrument is also available; made in the United States with precision, pride, and passion.
